A Diary of Hope

Doll Stanley

Sorry to have disappointed everyone by missing last weeks report. We had guests at Project Hope and we had a full schedule.

Judy Jones, Ginger Langston, and Christian Husk, South-Bay IDA Chapter members, and long-time-friends of mine came to help out, share experiences with other sanctuaries, and eat Razzle Berry pie. I had a ball. I barely said good-bye when I returned them to Memphis where they would spend a day and then fly home. It had been two years since I had seen them at a get-together in San Jose, CA. on my last visit to Mom. I miss them, and all my friends terribly. Seeing them was a genuine boost. Having friends here to share in, and experience Project Hope was awesome. I only got my hand slapped a few times for hoarding responsibilities.

We went on an abandonment case together. About 30 cats, and 11 dogs were abandoned outside of Union, MS. when a Dr., who lost her license to practice, abandoned her property and the companions who were so dependent on her. We were able to aid three dogs, and to determine the extent of the rescue ahead.

I have since returned with the aid of Bob & Robin Crumpton, and a Jackson, MS. organization, MARL. We rescued eight cats, and two more dogs. This Thursday the Crumpton's and I will return to try to rescue the remainder of the animals. (A woman who was in contact with me regarding the animals rescued five of the cats, who have been placed.)

The cats are severely emaciated, and both the cats and dogs are unsocial. Christine Husk has offered to foster one of the dogs. This little dog is missing a front leg. Her shoulder bares either a fresh wound, or she is bothered by it and keeping it inflamed.

I spoke at the Exchange club while our friends were here. I had a lovely time. I knew many of the members of the club. I was alarmed that the Grenada County Sheriff, who is a member, disputed my claim that dog fighting is a problem in his county. I will make a list of the reports I am working on and share it with him.

Judy Jones brought her video camera and will be sharing the footage she shot here. She was able to get footage of a new resting deck being delivered by Mr. Mims. Our latest addition to the Canine Care center is nearly complete.

I have much catching up to do, as I spent much of my time with our friends. Yesterday I traveled to Clarksdale, MS. to transport a load of dog food the Shelter shared with us. I may be able to go back for more next week. They are kindly sharing with other groups.

I spotted two female dogs searching the side of Hwy. 6 for anything to eat. I was able to determine that they lived nearby, and encouraged them to go home so I could follow. I will go back to ask the people to surrender five completely emaciated, and mange effected dogs.

King, the pit bull Bob & Robin saved when they busted a dog fight has been stolen again. Please let me emphasize how important it is to keep pit bulls out of animal shelters. King was stolen from one shelter after the arrest. We posted a $2,500.00 reward, and he was returned. The person who received him got no information on the person, so we could not peruse the knapping case.

King was moved to a shelter in another region, and after a party unsuccessfully tried to force the shelter to adopt King to him, King was cut out of his enclosure. We have placed another reward, but we are fearful we will not see King again. Thankfully, a different pit bull was turned in when someone thought it was King.

Pit Bulls are not safe in shelters. We are looking into alternatives to offer folks who aid them.

I am trying to catch up on the many cruelty reports that have come in. Bob & Robin are aiding me.

I am also seeking new volunteers to aid in our ever expanding needs here.

I am sure I have not covered even a tidbit of what is going on here, but at least you heard from me, and you got the great news about last weeks wonderful visit.

Talk with you soon, Doll
