| A Diary of Hope
The week of July 28, 2000 I told you how Terri Riley's trial went for "dog theft". Well. The judge recused himself and the judge that replaced him was cool. I know him from Pontotoc. He advised the counselors that there was no evidence that Terri ever had the dog in question. The case was dismissed without prejudice. If the plaintiff can find and prove that the dog was his it can be re-opened. Orita's "dog theft" case didn't go as well. It has been bound over to the Grand Jury. The Grand Jury will decide if there is substantial evidence for the felony charge to be heard in Circuit Court. Orita is accused of taking hunting dogs found on her property to a shelter where they were killed. The shelter records for the dogs in question do not show Orita as the person surrendering the dogs. There are plans for a suit against the plaintiffs at some point. The whole mess is over hunting camps and dog-hunters letting their dogs loose near her property. The dogs go where they want to. We placed Licorice cat. She was the cat I saved from the neglect of the Amory Humane Shelter. Humane - to pathetic to laugh. She suffered from upper respiratory and had no hair left on her face. She was not euthanized, treated, or kept from other cats. The place was a mess. I took pups that were being attacked by a mother dog who, with her pups was shut in with the victimized pups and their mom. Of eleven pups two were dead, I took nine, and most of them died or were euthanized. We did place a couple that could be saved. I am still working on the case. The builder was to be here today to look at the prototype of the decks he is to build for the new canine care center. He was a no-show. I have left two messages for the road man in the last couple of days, No response. If Henry, our neighbor doesn't get me first, I will prevail. The center will eventually be built. Judy Jones has ordered a ride-mower for us. Yes. Yes. Yes. It comes next week. I am thrilled. At last we can pass somewhat from the refugee camp look. John Taylor, one of our wonderful neighbors has been bringing his tractor over to bush-hog the front when it gets bad. Most of our neighbors are too cool. I may have to buy a new keyboard. Olivia hound crunched some keys. Weird - sometimes they work, most of the time they don't. Diane hasn't returned, and may not. I am taking big nectarine chill pills and smiling through the organized chaos and stress. I will organize my stress. I will control my chaos. No word on the Minteers' decision as to take or leave our plea-bargain offer. I'm going to be late to a meeting regarding our joint efforts with the Mississippi Animal Welfare Alliance to get humane ordinances passed in counties and cities. I am pres. of MAWA. Must sign off - but first let me tell you I am working on some cruelty cases, a dog theft case with a cool, but definite trail, and a bunch of other STUFF. Past diary entries July 17-21, 2000 |
