A Diary of Hope

The week of July 7, 2000

I just got back from trying to find a young dog with a plastic jug on her head.  This is getting to be a regular.  Gee, I wonder why a dog might get a container stuck on his or her head?  Duh!  Looking for food maybe?  I will take a trap to the area tonight.  The dog and her very pregnant mother both must be caught.  They are feral.

Today's court date for the Minteer's was continued until next month.

We have gotten two fairly good loads of dog food this week; we may get more tomorrow or Monday

Trying a different wormer.  Such fun - 3-day treatments in shifts of 14-19.

We placed the ducks and geese into a new home.  Until we get everyone set up squarely we can't afford to risk any escaped dogs hurting the birds.  They got an awesome home.  I do fear other predators where they are, but where we had to keep them was not suitable.  The mallards may actually fly away from their new home this winter.

We are continuing on our canine center project.

With rain this week clean-up is no fun.

I've received and addressed many of the usual calls regarding animals without shelter, water, etc.

Tonight is our Mississippi Animal Welfare Alliance (MAWA) meeting.  Legislation on state, county, and city levels will be our focus.  I'm scheduled to speak before the Halcomb board July 13.

Lots of things in the works.  This week was tied up with trips to the vet, feed procurement, and other vital sanctuary projects.  So much time on the road makes weeks like this crazy catch-up on the home front.

Got costs for cargo vans.  I hope one of the grants that we are seeking will furnish us greater capacity and comfort for transporting animals.  The heat of the summer keeps our adoption possibilities down.  We cannot carry as many animals to PetSmart in Jackson.
