Current diary entries I
Past diary entries Doll's Diary Account by Doll Stanley, May 10th, 2005 What a mess. I don't even want to mention the devastating event that happened this week for fear that word will spread. For now, I'll just say it had something to do with a bad experience I had in court. When I am able to make progress in that area I will fill your pages with news. There is hope on the horizon, however. We have set our first legislative meeting for June 15, 2005, where we are going to set the mark and dig our heels in. All those willing to give their all to our effort should get on board, 'cause the train is moving, and it's an express. Our main goal is not just to fulfill our mission of establishing strong anti-cruelty statues, but to have us all get behind one vital bill that will make a real difference. If folks continue to blindly ask their legislators for something to protect animals, we will again wind up with 5 or 6 poorly thought out bills that distract people from getting the laws with teeth that are truly needed. I say it's hardball time with candied frosting. On a lighter note, Sonya and George are getting married on May 21st. I am so excited for them, and so pleased that she has not lost sight of the care our animals need. It's a blessing to have Sonya on staff. Often, only the love of animals fosters the caregivers that sanctuaries must have, but Sonya has her family team providing aid, as well. She, Heather and George are doing a terrific job, and wonderfully freeing me of much of the work I once had to do at the sanctuary. This allows me to focus more of my energies on rescue work and cruelty cases. I am happy to report that Magdalene was adopted, and Olivia will have a new home next Sunday. She came back last Sunday because she dared to "shed." We're actually glad she was returned, because now she will have guardians who appreciate her beautiful fur. We took in a bunch of precious new animals this week. Susie is a beautiful blue-eyed hound mix that we accepted from some caring folks who found her abandoned near their residence. She will be spayed on Thursday. And then there are the five pups and four kittens at Doc's office waiting for adoption. I will send their photos and adoption info to the paper as soon as I finish this so the whole community will know these babies need good homes. We also took in a handsome American Bulldog named Arizona that had not one, not two (okay, I won't drag this out), but FIVE rubber bands cutting off the circulation of blood through his tail. We are so grateful that Bennie, a man from Grenada, called to ask if we would help this poor fellow. The needed surgery has relieved him of much suffering, and he is recuperating nicely. We hope to get him neutered and up for adoption as soon as he is ready. Lastly, I took a new little angel under my wing this week. Electra is a 6-week-old Catahoula-Rottie mix. She looks much like our Annie Panie, except for her beautifully colored block-shaped head. What a sweetie - a wonderful distraction from the jagged path we trudge. Despite the crippling blow we endured this week, there's so much excitement about the ideas we're working on. This Friday I will meet with some folks that may open a brand new door for PH. I can't tell you what's up until after the meeting, but I will say I'm dreaming of the real possibility of expanding our efforts here in a way that will enable us to help even more animals. Isn't this the most frustrating entry I've ever written? I can't even open up to you. That's okay. I hope I've piqued your interest, and that you'll be waiting on the edge of your seat for me to tell all ASAP. How strange it is that you can get out of bed in the morning with the world seeming such a huge burden, yet with the right outlook set a "take action" agenda for the day that makes all good seem possible. I am thankful for the aid that we get from veterinarians, friends in other groups, and just everyone who has a kind word to say about our efforts. Working alongside such wonderful people, I know that they too care about what happens to animals, and every positive word and deed is food for my soul. I'll end by saying that I know I withheld a lot of information, but I pray that I also conveyed the excitement of this time. I remain hopeful that all of the forces at work against us cannot beat us down or stop our progress. Few wonders have been accomplished in this world without campaigns of persistence and absolute determination. Yours truly, Doll |
