Between preparing for the Grassroots Animal Rights Conference (GARC) this weekend in New York City to following up on many cruelty cases, this has been one busy week!

I'm excited about my trip to the Big Apple for GARC, where I'll be speaking on some important topics very close to my heart: activism in the "Bible Belt" and conducting animal cruelty investigations. It's truly an honor to be on discussion panels with some of the movement's most dedicated grassroots animal advocates. I'm telling you, these people are doing amazing work. I really look forward to mingling with all the activists who will be at the conference.

But there's been so much to do here in our own neck of the woods before then, what with all my responsibilities at the sanctuary and the many cruelty cases in process. For example, just this week alone, I:
· Arranged to have doc euthanize a badly-injured horse
· Checked up on two groups of neglected horses and talked to their guardians about their proper care
· Prepared to prosecute a man for starving forty cows to death
· Helped a guardian provide better living conditions for his forty-plus beagles and convinced him to give some away until he had a more manageable number
· Worked with others to follow up on some puppy mill and abused pit bull reports
· Took in a number of abandoned animals and found temporary caretakers for others

There was also a lot to do around the sanctuary, like getting ready to battle parasites and summer vegetation. Special thanks to Mim's crew, who came out and reset two storage buildings for our convenience. We named Cassidy (seen strutting his stuff out on our patio) our Factor newspaper Companion of the Week. The adorable Maggie, David, Daniel, Henry and Gloria – pictured together in all their glory – have remained pups of the week two weeks running. One look in their brightly shining eyes and you can see why. Of the animals rescued this week, nine are bound for the Texas SPCA. But I've really got to run now, so I'll tell you all about them next time.
