Cruelty Cases:

I have spent the last few weeks absorbed in the Jerry Heair case. With lots of hard work, we have completed the housing, care, return and disposition testing of the sixty-two dogs. Of these, we kept all but the seventeen ordered returned by the judge. The opinion he handed down stated that, because the two people who petitioned the court for the return of the dogs were not residents of the property, it could not be proved that they intended to use them for fighting. Interestingly, the eleven dogs for which Jerry's wife petitioned were registered to him, and clearly of the bloodline that Sandy, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) dog fighting expert, determined was bred specifically for fighting. Fortunately, I have authorization from the court to check on these dogs over the next six months.

On Friday, Allen Scott called me asking for help with his horses. This is the third time I have dealt with these poor horses. The first time they were in Tate County and were starving. The second time they were in Panola County, near Pope, and starving. That's when we took Sara, who Dr. Vice has since adopted. This time the horses were starving yet again, plus the stallion had killed three of the other horses. Allen had thought that the problem at Pope was the land, but now he knows it was because the caretaker he’d hired and retained wasn’t doing his job. Now Allen pays $2,500 a month for his herd to be fed, and for the stallion to be boarded separately. Cruelty charges will be filed against the former caretaker who very nearly starved these horses to death. I helped Allen move them to their new stables.

Adoptions:

Randy Boo Boo and Ursula were adopted Sunday. I am having a hard time with Randy's leaving. We spent a lot of time together and developed a strong bond, so I just want to make certain he has the kind of loving home I know he needs and deserves.

We actually got four dogs back on Sunday. Jerry Lee and Heidi were returned to us because they were so shy that they didn't adapt to the children in their adopted families. Polly was also brought back because the women who adopted her thought it strange that the hamster they let Polly play with when they were home was knocked off the table while they were at work. Let's just say we are glad to have Polly back. Cassidy simply wanted to bully his new beagle companions, so he is also back with us. He just needs a home with a larger female that will hold her own. We love him so.

Vet care:

Merry is at Dr. Bailey's suffering from a huge bladder stone. Polly, who was returned Sunday, is being treated for a hernia.

Lots more going on but I have to go. I just got a call that a cat has been up on top of a utility pole for four days running and the power company refuses to help. I bet they'll change their tune when I call the media!
